The project is necessary to ensure reliable service for the
citizens of Culpeper County and will provide Culpeper County with a stronger
transmission system capable of serving future county growth for many years.
The project will also improve reliability by providing a second
feed to Rappahannock Electric Cooperative’s (REC’s) Mountain Run
substation. The need for additional capacity was initially identified in 2006,
based on normal load growth in the area. In March 2007, REC notified Dominion
of a new customer (Terremark Worldwide, Inc.). In addition, load growth between
summer 2006 and summer 2007 was 10% higher than expectations.
Dominion received approval from the Culpeper Board of Supervisors
in September of 2007 to complete the transmission line upgrade in order to maintain
reliable service for customers of Dominion, REC and the Town of Culpeper.
