You have the Power to Choose Green Power!

A voluntary program is available from Dominion Virginia Power that allows you to support renewable energy. This gives you the power to choose - the power to make a difference.

What is the Dominion Green Power Program?

By signing up your home or business for Dominion Green Power, you are ensuring that renewable energy is delivered to the electrical grid and you are helping to support new renewable energy facilities. To do this, Dominion will purchase renewable energy certificates in the amount specified by participating customers. For more information about the program, see the links in the right-hand menu.

How much does it cost?

The additional cost to participate in the Green Power program is a penny and a half per kilowatt-hour ($0.015 / kilowatt-hour). Additional charges for Dominion Green Power will appear as a separate line item on participating customer bills. Dominion does not make a profit on your Green Power purchase.

Green Power enrollment options:

"100% Option"

Pricing Details: This option allows you to purchase RECs equal to your monthly electricity use. This additional cost is calculated by adding a penny and a half ($0.015) per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity used to your monthly bill.
For Example: If you are enrolled in the 100% Option and use 1,000 kWh per month, you can expect to pay $15 more per month for Green Power (1,000 kWh x $0.015). Actual cost will be calculated by Dominion and will vary from month to month according to your actual electricity use.
Benefit of Participation: If you are enrolled in the "100% Option" for one year and use an average of 1,000 kWh each month, you contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions equal to removing one and a half cars from the road for a year.*

"Block Option"

Pricing Details: This option allows you to purchase RECs in any $2 fixed increment - as much as you wish. Each block represents 133 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy and costs $2 (based on a rate of $0.015 per kWh).
For Example: You can choose to add as much as you want per month ($2, $4, $6, $8, $10, $20… you choose!) to your monthly electricity bill to support renewable energy. The amount is up to you, and will be the same fixed amount on your bill each month.
Benefit of Participation: If you enroll in the "Block Option" for $10 more per month for one year, you reduce greenhouse gas emissions equal to removing one car from the road for a year. The more you buy, the more benefits you create.*

There is no minimum time period to stay in the program. You may cancel or change your enrollment without penalty.

* Calculations are approximate and based on EPA methodology.

This video from NewsChannel 8 features a Northern Virginia family that has signed up for Dominion Virginia Power's Green Power Program.

The family pays an extra 1.5 cents per kilowatt hour, and the money is used to purchase renewable energy certificates to support green energy development through a vendor called 3 Degrees.

Each renewable energy certificate features a unique serial number that corresponds with kilowatt hours that are put on the grid.
