Virginians have saved 1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity through Dominion Virginia Power's compact fluorescent lightbulb program.
Energy from the savings is enough to provide electricity to more than 72,000 Virginia homes for one year, based on average usage.
The program offers $1.50 discount on every single CFL and $3 for every multipack purchased at a participating Home Depot store.
Thus far, about 3.8 million bulbs have been sold through the program. Over the life of the bulbs, Virginians will save about $140 million by using CFLs rather than incandescent bulbs.
Although the CFL program ends on Dec. 31, it is expected to resume next year, pending Virginia State Corporation Commission approval.
