A pilot program to test customer preferences for charging electric vehicles is now under way.
The pilot gives electric-vehicle users a way to manage their charging costs and a way to recharge their vehicles at night in exchange for lower electricity prices.
In the pilot, participants could pay as little as 51 cents to charge their vehicle overnight with enough power to go 40 miles.
This compares with a cost of about $1.10 with the standard residential electric rate.
Electric vehicle owners can enroll until Nov. 30, 2013. The pilot program ends on Nov. 30, 2014.
