Soaring to New Heights
At one point or another, just about every child dreams about being an astronaut. Now, thanks to the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center, children in the Horseheads area of New York have the chance to build the skills they’ll need to accomplish that dream.
Drawing from a national heritage of aerospace accomplishments, the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center uses hands-on and interactive methods to engage students in the study of science, technology, engineering and math. In the Center’s robotics programs, students work together in teams to build robots from design specifications and program them to perform tasks using computer software.
A $5,000 grant from Dominion energy is funding learning activities for children at the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center in the Horseheads are of New York.
Thanks to a $5,000 grant from Dominion Energy, the Center’s Makerspace Program will soon include separate areas of high-tech items like TJ Bots and Raspberry Pi cards, with each area having a curriculum supported with program materials. The space will also include paints, a Lego area complete with Lego walls, and a station for sewing and knitting.
According to the director of education, Nicole Burt, "Wings of Eagles Discovery Center is looking to continue our mission of educating the youth. We are excited to be able to offer a makerspace that will increase knowledge about new and upcoming tech, giving the community a chance to interact with technology that they may be unfamiliar with."
